Swiss Chard Salad

Swiss Chard Salad: Swiss chard is a leafy green vegetable used in Mediterranean cooking. Its stalk is multicolored. It belongs to the same family that as beetroot, so to distinguish from other vegetable especially spinach it has been called Swiss chard in the nineteenth century. Chard is very rich in vitamins A, K and C. It has a characteristic bitter taste and has found its place in the Arabian cuisine.

Mango is the king of all fruits known for nutritious value and sweetness.  It’s rich in carbohydrates and vitamins. Mango possesses antioxidant properties. It’s a very popular fruit and grown in the equatorial countries, India being the second highest producer of Mango in the world.

A combination of the two will give a scrumptious salad; One day it came in my mind to try a different type of salad which will be a fruity wonder. Swiss chard is bitter and mango is sweet, but both compliments the taste of each other, especially when tossed with condiments. You will enjoy this never before taste with your family.

Swiss Chard Salad

Difficulty: Medium

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Serves: 2


  • 2 medium mangoes, chopped
  • 2 bundles Swiss chard
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil


  1. Heat olive oil in a stock pan. Add ginger, salt and Swiss chard. Leaf and stalk form the edible portion of this green vegetable. Cook for 15 minutes till the vegetable becomes soft.
  2. Remove and keep aside, allow cooling.
  3. Add the chopped mango to it and toss properly. Add salt to it.

This will be a typical bitter, sweet and hot taste with a zest of the ginger flavor. When it’s hot and you want to try something juicy, then this combination will be the best. It’s always preferable to try green vegetables in semi cooked state so as to obtain a healthy food that will be a bit filling. This recipe is not recommended for those having diabetes as mango has got a high content of sugar and carbohydrates in it.
